Kovalam is another popular beach destination in the state of Kerala, located about 16 kilometers from the capital city of Thiruvananthapuram. It is known for its beautiful sandy beaches, coconut groves, and vibrant nightlife. Here are some key features and attractions of Kovalam:
Kovalam Beach:
The main beach in Kovalam is divided into three parts – Lighthouse Beach, Hawah Beach, and Samudra Beach. Lighthouse Beach is the most popular and crowded among the three. The beaches offer soft golden sands, clear waters, and are surrounded by palm trees.
Lighthouse:
The iconic lighthouse located on a rocky promontory is a major attraction of Kovalam. Visitors can climb to the top of the lighthouse to enjoy panoramic views of the coastline and the Arabian Sea.
Ayurvedic Treatments:
Kovalam is renowned for its Ayurvedic treatments and wellness centers. Many resorts and spas in the area offer traditional Ayurvedic massages, therapies, and rejuvenation programs.
Water Sports:
Kovalam offers a variety of water sports activities such as surfing, parasailing, jet skiing, and catamaran rides. Adventure enthusiasts can enjoy these thrilling activities along the coastline.
Vizhinjam Rock Cut Cave Temple:
Located close to Kovalam, the Vizhinjam Rock Cut Cave Temple is an ancient temple carved out of a cliff. It is a historically significant site and showcases intricate rock-cut sculptures.
Vellayani Lake:
Situated a short distance from Kovalam, Vellayani Lake is a tranquil freshwater lake surrounded by lush greenery. It is an ideal place for boating and picnicking.
Karamana River:
The Karamana River flows through Kovalam and offers scenic boat rides amidst the serene backwaters. You can explore the river’s beauty and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
Aazhimala Beach:
The primary attraction of Aazhimala is its pristine beach, characterized by golden sands and clear blue waters. The beach offers a peaceful and secluded atmosphere, making it an ideal spot for relaxation and enjoying the beauty of the Arabian Sea.
Aazhimala Siva Temple:
The village is also known for its ancient Siva Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple’s unique architecture and religious significance attract devotees and tourists alike.
Weather
Kovalam enjoys a tropical climate as it is very close to the equator. You can expect heavy showers during the monsoons and when I say heavy, it really means enormous rains, which is another reason to visit the place. The months from October to February are winters that will be mild and not extreme. Throughout the year Kovalam experiences mild winds, which should be kept in mind while you are preparing to come here.
Transportation
Kovallam is well-connected by Air, Water and land and is in proximity to Trivandrum – the capital city. I found private taxis here as well for convenience.
