Pazhassi Raja. a scion of Kottayam royal family, was one of the earliest to strike against the
British rule in India. He resorted to the guerilla warfare to fight against the British East India
Company, taking refugee in Wayanad Hills. Pazhassi Raja was killed in an encounter at
Mavilanthode near Pulpally on November 30th 1805 ( In history it is also recorded as December
Ist 1805). The remains of Pazhassi Raja was brought to Mananthavady and buried according
to the traditional rites. The Tomb of the great Pazhassi Raja is a protected monument. There
was a huge tree near the Tomb and nor,,, it’s remans have also been protected.
